At 4:30 on Saturday afternoon, December 12, a 103-foot catamaran will pull away from downtown Poulsbo with up to 150 Seattle day-trippers aboard. Fifteen minutes later, Poulsbo Yacht Club boats will leave their slips to line up for the Lighted Ships Parade, which starts at 5 p.m. just outside the club's marina.
That half hour shows how the new holiday excursion is built. FRS Clipper's Poulsbo Express starts this season, and its schedule follows the daytime half of downtown's holiday weekends almost to the minute. Most of the evening events happen after the boat has gone.
Ten Sailing Days, 150 Seats at a Time
Kitsap Daily News reported on October 22 that FRS Clipper will run the Seattle-to-Poulsbo trip on four weekends, leaving Seattle's Pier 69 in the morning and crossing through Agate Pass to arrive directly in downtown Poulsbo. The Poulsbo Express booking page lists the dates, and there are fewer Fridays than "Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays" suggests.
| Weekend | Sailing days | Also downtown that weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving weekend | Fri Nov 27, Sat Nov 28, Sun Nov 29 | Holiday Market, tree lighting, Small Business Saturday, first weekend of Santa |
| Julefest weekend | Sat Dec 5, Sun Dec 6 | Julefest on Saturday, with a separate sailing schedule that day |
| Lighted Ships weekend | Sat Dec 12, Sun Dec 13 | Lighted Ships Parade Saturday at 5 p.m. |
| Final weekend | Fri Dec 18, Sat Dec 19, Sun Dec 20 | Holiday Market returns |
Fridays December 4 and December 11 are not on the list. The only Friday sailings fall on the two weekends when the Poulsbo Historical Society's Holiday Market is set up on the Heritage Museum Lawn at 19020 Front St.
The scale is modest. According to FRS Clipper's vessel information page, the Emerald Clipper carries 150 passengers plus three to four service attendants. FRS has also used a figure of "up to 300 guests," but its December 2025 announcement tied that number to two whale-watching sailings a day. The Poulsbo Express makes one round trip a day and sells only round-trip tickets, so the season's maximum is ten sailings of 150 people each, or 1,500 seats in total.
The Emerald Clipper is new this year. Mavrik Marine built it in La Conner, and FRS brought it in to replace the San Juan Clipper on its Seattle whale-watching route. These December trips are its first holiday season.
The Boat Keeps Front Street's Hours
On standard sailings, passengers arrive at about 11:30 a.m., must be back at the dock by 4:00 p.m., and leave at 4:30. Now compare that window with the weekend program the Historic Downtown Poulsbo Association publishes every winter:
- Photos with Santa, at his house on Front Street, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday from Thanksgiving weekend
- Christmas carolers, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the same weekends
- Olaf and the Vikings, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the same weekends
Santa's hours end at the same time as the boat's boarding deadline. FRS lists all three programs on its own itinerary, along with the North Pole mailbox near Santa's house and planned performances by the NK High School Choir. The company is open about the pitch. "This is about creating a complete holiday day trip, not simply getting people from Seattle to Poulsbo," Nik Coutinho, FRS Clipper's director of sales and marketing, said in the release covered by Kitsap Daily News.
The city and the Port welcomed the plan in the same release. Mayor Ed Stern said the arrivals offer "new opportunities for visitors to experience Poulsbo's unique charm, vibrant local businesses, and festive Nordic holiday traditions." Port of Poulsbo manager James Weaver said bringing visitors to the waterfront to "support local businesses, and generate lasting economic benefit for our community is an important part of the Port's economic development mission." FRS's page says only that the boat lands at a dock within walking distance of downtown. It does not name a float.
The businesses FRS sends passengers to are familiar Front Street stops: Sluys Poulsbo Bakery for pastries, Nordiska for Scandinavian gifts, Red Plantation and Details Home and Garden for décor, Rust & Relic for vintage finds, and The Sip, State 42 Wines and Details Wine Bar for seasonal pours and mulled wine. The page also points visitors to the Haven Vei breezeway, the Norwegian Stairs beside Indigo Plum, Send Nodes and Poulsbo Coffee Co.
The Hour and a Half Before the Boat Arrives
The Seattle crossing doesn't leave Pier 69 until 10 a.m. Several downtown events open at that same time.
The Holiday Market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both of its weekends. That leaves about an hour and a half of browsing local makers, plus hot drinks in the gazebo, before anyone from the boat comes ashore. The Historical Society is still recruiting vendors, with booths at $150 per weekend, so the full lineup isn't set yet.
On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday is also a 2026 sailing day, so downtown shops have the morning before about 11:30 without the boat's passengers.
After 4:30, the Evenings Mostly Belong to Poulsbo
Downtown's best-known evening events fall outside the boat's standard window. The second weekend of December shows it most clearly.
Saturday, December 12
- 11:30 a.m. The Emerald Clipper arrives.
- 4:00 p.m. Passengers return to the dock and Santa's house closes.
- 4:30 p.m. The boat leaves for Seattle.
- 4:45 p.m. Poulsbo Yacht Club boats leave the dock.
- 5:00 p.m. The Lighted Ships Parade begins just outside the PYC Marina.
The tree lighting at Waterfront Park follows the same pattern but with less certainty. HDPA schedules it for the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is November 27 this year and also the first Poulsbo Express sailing day. The City of Poulsbo's special events page still lists the date and time as to be determined. Once the city posts a start time, it will show whether that day's passengers can see the lighting before the 4:30 departure.
Julefest is the one exception FRS has built in. HDPA lists Julefest for the first Saturday in December, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., which falls on December 5 this year. The program includes the Nordic Market, Vikings, Taste of Norway, St. Lucia and the Solstice Bonfire. The Sons of Norway Julefest page gives the Nordic Market's hours as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. FRS says its December 5 sailing "follows a different schedule to align with the festivities" and hasn't published those times. The FRS page promotes Julefest's waterfront torchlight procession and bonfire, so this is the one sailing day whose timing could fit an evening event.
Parking Is Already on Winter Rates
The excursion adds no cars to downtown, since its passengers park in Seattle. FRS validates parking at the Bell Street Pier Garage. Downtown parking is on its winter schedule. The City of Poulsbo's October newsletter says waterfront parking dropped to $1 an hour on October 15 and stays there until April. Tuesdays and federal holidays are free, as are more than 60% of city-owned downtown spaces, on the street and in the King Olaf parking lot.
None of the ten sailing days is a Tuesday. On every sailing day except Julefest, the boat's passengers are downtown from about 11:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and the Emerald Clipper leaves at 4:30.
Season after season, the team at Mark Middleton Real Estate has watched Poulsbo's waterfront change with the calendar. If a busier downtown has you thinking about where your family wants to be on Liberty Bay next December, we would welcome the conversation. Request a private consultation.
